La Serenissima After Dark

The same bridge as La Salute at Dawn, fifteen hours later. The city reveals a different geometry after dark — the canal narrows visually, the lights that mark its margins multiply in the water, and La Salute becomes less a building than a suggestion at the end of a corridor of illuminated water.

This image was made on a tripod with a long exposure. The moving lights of boats crossing the canal during the exposure have resolved into streaks and halos in the water. The camera recorded twelve seconds of a city that appears, in the resulting image, to be entirely still.
