La Salute at Dawn

From the Accademia Bridge at first light. The Grand Canal was already moving — a maintenance boat working its way toward Dorsoduro, the vaporetto schedule not yet running. The sun was below the edge of the buildings on the right bank but its light was fully on the dome of La Salute, which appeared to be self-illuminating against the pale gold of the sky.

Santa Maria della Salute was built as a votive offering after the plague of 1630, which killed a third of the city's population. The building that was meant to be an act of gratitude has been standing for nearly four centuries. It does not particularly care what it was built for. It stands.
